BACTERIAL CONCRETE

Concrete is the key material for mankind to create the built environment, the requirements for which are both demanding in terms of technical performance and economy. Based on continuous research carried out around the globe, various from of innovation have been made from time to time to improve its strength, ductility and durability performances 1. The concrete construction industry worldwide also has become increasingly alert to the need for invention and the competitive advantage it can bring. Use of microorganisms within the concrete leading to the process of biomineralisation concept is now becoming a potential field of research in concrete technology 2 –5 . With this background in view, an experimental program has been taken up to improve the properties of concrete using favorable microorganism Shewanella SP 6 derived from hot spring water at Bakreswar, West Bengal.
|
From the present experimental study it can be concluded that addition of a facultative anaerobic iron reducing microorganism obtained from hot spring of Bakreshwar ,West Bengal improve both the compressive strength and the split tensile strength of concrete. The maximum compressive strength and split tensile strength was observed at 105 cells /ml of concentration for the present study. The improvement in strength at a particular cell concentration is almost similar at all ages. This study indicates an improvement in both compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete mainly due to the modification of pore structure with the development of special fillers. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis has been made to identify the development of such growth or fillers. However, more research studies on this topic are needed to identify the special growth.
